Konjac root sponge…ever heard of one?
Konjac root sponges, or konjac sponges, are soft sponges made out of konjac root from the amorphophallus konjac plant.
I wanted to start using a konjac sponge because of its many benefits including:
*100% natural, vegetable sponge
*Gently cleanses and exfoliates to remove impurities and buff away dead skin
*Can be used with or without cleanser
*Suitable for sensitive skin types
*Compostable

I showed the above picture to one of my best friends this weekend and she asked if I had a different sponge for every day of the week.  :) Good question!
Remember my post about different skin types and determining yours? (if you missed it click here). The reason for the different sponges is because the same concept applies here, you need to choose a sponge based on your skin type. Everyone should not be using the same sponge.   Can you believe I actually learned it the hard way?!

So...I started using one of these konjac sponges since I had received it as a gift with purchase from one of my favorite natural brands. The one I had was a konjac sponge with bamboo charcoal.  I used if for about three weeks and I was really impressed with the sponge's softness.  All konjac sponges can be used with or without cleanser since they will gently exfoliate and draw out impurities from your pores.  I realized my dry skin was not improving since charcoal is drying.  This prompted me to quickly look into which sponge would be beneficial for dry skin.  I purchased one with green tea infused in it.  This sponge is supposed to be beneficial for all skin types but especially for those with sensitive skin.  I’ve been using that sponge for about 4 weeks now and my skin has greatly improved; no more dry, peeling patches!  I’ve since done more research to see which sponge I should use for dry skin.  I found this sponge and just got it a couple of days ago! I will post about my results in the next few weeks.
So… here’s what I learned so far and would recommend if you want to try one of these (which I recommend you do)!!

Dry skin - konjac sponge with french pink clay (I got this one).  Should be pink in color.
Normal skin - plain konjac sponge (no additives).  This is usually a white sponge.
Combination skin - either the plain one or the charcoal one depending on your specific skin needs.
Oily skin - konjac sponge with charcoal.  This will be a grey sponge.
Acne prone skin - konjac sponge with charcoal.
Sensitive skin - konjac sponge with green tea - usually green  in color.

Usage tips:
*A lot of these sponges are hard and dry when you get them out of their packaging.  This is completely normal, just soak in warm water for about 5 minutes and you'll see the sponge will grow in size and become soft.
*Squeeze out any excess water; it is now ready for use!
*Use with or without cleanser, gently massage skin in circular motions and be sure to include your neck.
*Rinse your face and your sponge.
*Gently squeeze sponge until there are no longer suds (if you used cleanser).
*Hang to dry (if it has a string), otherwise set aside to dry in a well ventilated area.
*Don't wring out the sponges; they're fragile.
*Sanitize every 2 weeks by placing in bowl with water and microwaving for 90 seconds.
*Replace every 2-3 months (remember they're compostable) :)

So are you ready to try one of these?  Have you used one of these before?  Which one, and how did you like it?

These are the three brands I've tried so far:
100% Pure
Earth Therapeutics
